Grid expansion: it goes faster with EPLAN

EPLAN products meet the requirements for the electrical engineering planning and documentation of transformer stations and substations. This means that these types of stations can be designed more quickly than before. The software also enables the standardisation and automation of electrical engineering designs.

We need better power grids

Everything can probably be reduced to this simple sentence: with the switch to renewable energies, increasing amounts of energy must be transported. We therefore need more efficient power grids. But what sounds so simple is really quite complex. Because getting transmission and distribution grids retrofitted for this is a bit like open-heart surgery: while transformer stations and substation are being upgraded or newly built, “normal operations” must continue as reliably as they ever have.

In addition, the number of grid stations and substations that must be planned, designed and built worldwide is likely in the high six-figures, making it unfeasible with current design and production methods!

It’s a good thing that EPLAN can also do energy. Our products meet the requirements for the electrical engineering design and production of transformer stations and substations. With EPLAN, electrical engineers have the tools they need to design switchgear systems for various voltage levels – faster than was previously possible. The traditional software functions such as single-line and multi-line schematics, 3D designs in the area of assembly layout and evaluations for terminal diagrams – as an example – are all taken into account. Requirements from production have also been considered and the data can be transferred exactly as is and used for manufacturing.

How our customers benefit

Netz Burgenland GmbH

EPLAN Electric P8 pays off for converting substations

“Even though we don’t do the engineering for new substations ourselves and only plan conversions and expansions to existing systems, using EPLAN Electric P8 really pays off. Its widespread use by our suppliers, its easy and clear operation, the excellent documentation it provides and the future-proof nature of this technologically mature software have confirmed our decision to switch to EPLAN.”

New energy with EPLAN – these are the benefits

Support for the challenges of the energy transition

EPLAN software can help grid operators further advance grid expansion. For the past twenty years, it has also been geared to the specific needs of companies in the energy sector. It digitalises the planning of new facilities or conversions – thus speeding up processes.

Planning security & network effects

EPLAN Electric P8 is a future-oriented software tool that is continually being improved and expanded. Additionally, electrical engineering with EPLAN is widespread and many suppliers are already using the software. The delivery of switchgear systems and transformers with EPLAN documentation is also part of the standard repertoire of many manufacturers.

Clear & meaningful

The electrical engineering design of systems takes place in 3D design. This makes documentation meaningful and clear. EPLAN Electric P8 offers this added value in combination with EPLAN Pro Panel.

Even so-called brownfield projects – i.e., the conversion of existing plants – can also be simplified using EPLAN software. For instance, control and protection technology and interfaces to primary technology can be planned and designed.

Standardisation & time savings

Our software helps establish the same formats and even fixed processes. The standardisation of electrical engineering gets started in design and project planning. The fact that suppliers, system integrators and service technicians are all working on the basis of uniform specifications is yet another positive aspect.

Consistency & efficiency

Data is used consistently throughout the construction and manufacturing process. For instance, operators benefit from the fact that suppliers of protection technology and control technology systems can continue to seamlessly work with the documentation from the project planning phase and supplement it with their detail engineering. Design and construction processes can therefore be completed in half the time. Even scheduled maintenance of service calls during operations are also accelerated.

The right energy solutions from A to Z

Our products and solutions standardise and automate work steps – to increase the tempo.

EPLAN Electric P8: Electrical engineering planning during construction and operations

You can generate schematics for transformer stations and substations in EPLAN Electric P8. This means you can standardise and automate the creation of the entire electrotechnical documentation. Even during the early engineering phase, suppliers and clients work together better thanks to shared project data.

EPLAN Data Portal: Keeping the overview through consistency

Standardised device data is the name of the game for the EPLAN Data Portal. Along with alpha-numeric device data, the portal also contains schematic macros, multilingual device information, preview images and documentation. The device data provided by the manufacturers is directly integrated into the EPLAN Platform when it is downloaded. This creates structure, an overview and greater data depth. Not to mention more momentum!

EPLAN Preplanning: Clear and structured data right from the very start

Using EPLAN Preplanning, plant system structures, process data and project information are recorded and managed in a structured way from the very start. This allows you to transform traditional working processes. Standards are set from the beginning so that the details, for instance in primary and secondary technology, are worked out using the same foundation. Data – for high-voltage system planning as an example – can easily be imported and exported, saving time and requiring less effort.

EPLAN eBUILD: Effectively advancing engineering

EPLAN eBUILD lets you use schematic templates to automatically create new schematics from your current project data. Frequently used combinations are managed in a central template library. These typically used combinations can then be used to more quickly design entire substations.

EPLAN eVIEW: Networking the energy ecosystem

Optimise collaboration in your engineering projects across system, discipline, departmental and geographical boundaries using solutions such as EPLAN eVIEW.

Easy getting started and clever project planning with the EPLAN Engineering Standard

We promised to make your work with EPLAN software even easier. To fulfil this promise right from the start, we support you with the EPLAN Engineering Standard. It contains useful templates and examples that you can use in various phases of project work, meaning your planning and design use a standardised foundation of data. For the energy sector, we offer a template of a transformer station for downloading. The provided project demonstrates systematic and standardised planning for energy technology. Primary and secondary technology, as well as protection technology is shown and a complete transformer station is depicted.*
